Interbike is a cycling industry trade show with the main purpose of exposing bike shop owners and employees (known in the industry as IBDs, I.ndependent B.icycle D.ealer) to the latest bikes, parts and accessories from many different manufacturers. However, over the past few years, more and more big manufacturers have taken to holding their own individual dealer camps. These single brand specific dealer camps cost the manufacturer a fair amount of money, but also provide many benefits (held earlier in the year than Interbike; brand has full focus of dealers; information presented “en masse” vs. talking to dealers one at a time, repeating the same information over and over….the list of benefits goes on.)
Like other big manufacturers, Specialized holds their own dealer camps and media camps before Interbike. The list of manufacturers who do this include all the big names (Trek, Specialized, Giant, Cannondale, Scott Sports….) since they are the ones big enough to have the budget to hold special one off camps for their top dealers and media partners. Often, these manufacturers don’t even show up at Interbike or only show up for the Outdoor Demo portion of the show.
This year, though, Specialized had a pretty sizable booth at the indoor portion of the show, specifically for their “gear” products. Chief among these are their shoes, gloves, helmets and saddles. Access to their booth was pretty exclusive, with a Specialized employee scanning the Interbike badge ID of all entrants. Armed with our media badge and camera, here are a few highlights from the Specialized 2011 Gear line-up.
Stumpy II casual shoe:
The bright yellow definitely catches your eye! These look like the high-end S-Works Road Shoe, but they are marketed as a “casual” shoe. However, given the look and the features, I suspect quite a few freeride/DH riders might choose these non-SPD shoes to ride in with their flat pedals.
