In my quest to create a series of mountain biking “competencies” (tests to show if you have mastered a skill). Here is a great video of clearing a rock using two basic skills, a wheelie and weight shift. This is the exact same skill to get over a small curb correctly just done on a larger obstacle. Remember, always use “baby steps” when progressing a skill! It is much better to gain confidence through a series of victories than risk injury and/or a big failure that can set you back mentally.

World Champion Ross Schnell working on mountain bike descending skills with BetterRide Master Coach Gene Hamilton in Sedona, AZ.
By first leaning the correct cornering techniques and then practicing them at slow speed in a controlled environment you start to develop correct habits. If you can’t corner as well on pavement as BetterRide student Mitch Ropelato does on dirt you will never corner well on dirt! Form, ingrain and perfect thee correct techniques on pavement and then transfer them to the trail. Going fast with poor technique is scary, going fast with perfect technique is easy!

Ross Schnell, 2009 Singlespeed World Champion, 2008 Downieville Classic Winner and Trek Factory Rider said, “I learned more today than in the last 10-11 years of riding” (in a rushed 3.5 hour lesson, BetterRide camps are 19-22 hours over 3 days!)
Here is what 2009 Pro 4x and Jr. Cat 1 Downhill US National Champion Mitch Ropelato said in a interview in the Oct. 2009 issue of DIRT Magazine:
Dirt Magazine: “You seem to be able to turn amazingly, what do you put that down to? Got any special tires on there?
Mitch Ropelato: ” Ya, Gene Hamilton is to thank for that, I took is clinic last December in Bootleg Canyon and he was able to show me the correct technique I needed to pull them off.”
Ross Schnell, 2009 Singlespeed World Champion, 2008 Downieville Classic Winner and Trek Factory Rider said, “I learned more today than in the last 10-11 years of just riding” (in a rushed 3.5 hour lesson, BetterRide camps are 19-22 hours over 3 days!) and tweeted “Learned a lot today about riding bikes faster and more efficiently, uphill and downhill. So psyched to get back to the basics and get faster!”.
With some of the best racers in the world saying things like that about my camps, everyone can benefit from a BetterRide Camp
