American Classic packs some serious tech in the newest addition to their wheel line. The 2012 MTB Race 29 weighs in at 1419 grams for the set and uses a 340 gram aluminum rim (remember, this is a 29er wheelset). Bill Shook designed the new rim to be wider at 28mm and only 23mm deep and to have a super shallow locking bead American Classic calls Bead Barb and allows riders to run standard non-UST tires with the bead locking into a tight channel on the rim. This tight fit prevents air burping and increases the air volume in the tire allowing riders to run less pressure for better traction.
American Classic hubs are also filled with some sweet technology.
1) The hubs use lightweight aluminum pawls that mechanically engage simulatiously to ensure the light weight aluminum pawls perform flawlessly and have the same longevity as other manufacture’s steel pawls.
2) To keep the bearings from binding under heavey torque American Classic added an aluminum sleeve with concentric cuts. This feature gives just enough compression to allow for bearing adjustment while keeping the bearings straight on the axle when loaded.
3) Another clever feature is the aluminum cassette body uses steel strips to keep cassettes from wearing through the softer aluminum.
Finally all this technolgy is available in the MTB Race 26 wheelset as well!
